Remembering Murray Phillips

Murray Phillips

It is with deep sadness that I share with you the passing of our friend Murray Phillips, AFC artist, conservationist and board member (2014-2017).

Murray was an inspiring and passionate champion for nature, through his art and an extraordinary public speaking ability. His message encouraging all of us to "see slowly" resonated deeply with audiences. With Murray's passing, we've lost a friend and uniquely articulate advocate for society reconnecting with the wilderness.

Murray and his wife, Evelyn have been tireless supporters of AFC activities for years. As a couple, they could always be found leading the charge in the huge and largely thankless task of exhibit set-up and take-down. Ever the philosopher, Murray offered sage guidance, compassion and insight toward refining the course of AFC. He was particularly effective in connecting with youth and inspiring new generation of children to embrace, understand and love the natural world. For this we will be indebted.

Murray brought a unique and powerful combination of communications skills, artistic talent, knowledge, business acumen, passion and commitment to AFC. "We are losing the wilderness not primarily through pollution or over population but, first of all, because of disinterest and neglect. We simply are unaware of what a treasure this is and we have little interest or knowledge of the wilderness and its inhabitants".

Murray regularly expressed his deep desire to awaken a yearning to reconnect with the wilderness. "The wilderness has profound lessons for us if we will make the effort to slow our pace and be silent and listen; just go into the wilderness and start to listen."

We will miss Murray.

With deep regards,

Jeffrey Whiting
